4 Common Cellulite Myths Debunked

Myth #1: Losing weight will eliminate cellulite

Cellulite is not the result of excessive fat, instead it is caused by weakened connective tissues. Losing weight may make cellulite less noticeable, but it will not go away completely. While you lose weight healthily, opt for strength training exercises that focus on building muscle and toning the body so that cellulite appearance may be less visible.

Myth #2: Only women get cellulite

Although it is more prevalent among women, a lot of men do get it too. Cellulite refers to the normal fat underneath the skin pushing against collagen fibres (connective tissue). The connective tissue in women is arranged in vertical rows, while it’s more closely bound in a latticed pattern in men. Men’s connective tissue structure has more support, hence resulting in less appearance of cellulite.

Myth #3: Cellulite is caused by toxins in the body

As mentioned, cellulite occurs when underlying fat deposits pushes through layers of collagen fibers, or connective tissue, beneath the skin. These connective tissues are weakened by hormones, lack of exercise, excess fat and poor circulation.

Cellulite can appear on all body types generally due to the weakened connective tissues. However, being overweight does make the appearance of cellulite more noticeable as the more fat you have under your skin, the more it stresses on your connective tissue and bulge out of its weak spots.
